- The main assignment in the class is a research paper that uses existing research in political psychology and related disciplines to propose an explanation for a contemporary
political event. Contemporary political event is defined very broadly to include specific events (e.g., the election of Donald Trump in 2016) or more general political trends (e.g., changes in Americans’ views of policing after the George Floyd protests). Your paper may also focus on campus politics, LA politics, U.S. politics, or the politics of another country. The main limitation is that there must be sufficient existing research for you to cite in support of your argument.
- Write a Short Memo : Write a concise memo (1-2 pages, double spaced) identifying a thesis for your paper and describing the thesis’s importance. Your thesis should be important in two senses: it should make an argument that tells us something substantively interesting the contemporary political event, and it should connect to an important preexisting literature in political science as discussed above
