In this week’s discussion, we listened to Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and and focused on a few specific instruments. In this case, we will look at entire instrument families and how they act within the orchestra.

For this assignment, I would like to focus on an orchestral instrument family of your choosing. You can choose from either the Strings, Brass, Woodwinds or Percussion families. Why did you choose this instrument family? Then, you will detail how each of these instruments produce sound (Chorophone, etc.). Explain what instruments make up that family and if possible, list them from highest voice (soprano) to lowest voice (bass). In the case of percussion, describe if each instrument is pitched or unpitched. What is the typical makeup of that family in the orchestra? You can use the chart on page 48 of the textbook or find another source online if necessary. Finally, what role do you think this family plays in the orchestra?
