This week we will be studying religion, cultural traditions, and how they relate to matters of identity. In many ways, both Gonzalez-Broyles and Marchi complicate our thinking about Religion, Traditions, & Identity. For this week’s discussion, please consider the articles primary arguments within the contexts of all the other materials that we have studied to date in this course. Please cite at least one other work (reading or film) from the course you can connect to each of this week’s readings.
Essay
From the content studied in Chapter 11, you need to choose one interest group that works at the federal level (NAACP, NRA, etc.). Then, you will need to research that interest group and write an essay addressing the following components.
Background information: describe the purpose or mission of your interest group. Include when, where, and why it was founded and who the founders were.
How many members does the interest group have? Does the group provide any service to its members to overcome the free-rider problem? Explain.
What type of legislation has it supported or opposed? Provide details.
Has it donated money to a public official running for election or a presidential candidate? How much money? Does the group endorse candidates of a particular political party?
What type of strategies has the interest group used to influence public policy? Describe at least three strategies from below:
Lobbying
Litigation (going to Court)
Going Public
Electioneering
Alliances with other interest groups
