Individual term research report: An evaluation of the effectiveness of the WTO in today’s global business environment

There is no doubt that the WTO was established to leverage the effectiveness of globalization in international trade flows. Over the past several decades, we can see major events happening within or outside of this organization; for example, most economists and trade experts would agree that the trade dispute between China and the U.S., which has started as early as 2017, can be sourced back to the Doha Development Round when China was accepted into the WTO, who has been experiencing a booming trade ever since. A more recent example is the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine; as we can see among the multiple sanctions that have been issued against Russia, voices of kicking Russia out of the WTO are frequently mentioned. However, because of economic ties between Russia and related countries, especially Europe countries, hesitation arises as many European countries rely on the export of Russian natural resources.
