I’m working on a english discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Read two articles listed under ‘Readings’: McWhorter 2012 & King & Kinzler 2020. McWhorter makes the argument that “proper” grammar is just a matter of fashion, and that it’s really not grounded in any logic or reasoning. Every language has a supposedly “correct” version of it, usually based on the way the people with the most power speak (in America that’s generally the language of rich white men). This leads to many other varieties of language being considered “incorrect.” King & Kinzler discuss the intersection of linguistic and racial discrimination.
Having read both of these articles, how do you feel about notions of “proper” English? Have you been critiqued for your language before? If you’re not a native speaker of English, answer these questions with reference to your native language.
