ASTR – Planetary protection discussion
Description
In order to not contaminate other planets and moons with microorganisms from Earth the Planetary Protection Policy has requirements for spacecraft sterilization. These rules depend on the type of planet.
Mars exploration has requirements for sterilizing spacecraft or rovers that will land on the surface. In addition, Mars has areas that are off limits for exploration, particularly those that might have potential for water which could harbor evidence of microorganizms. You can imagine the problem if microbial life were discovered on Mars but it could potentially have been transported from Earth.
Suggest in several paragraphs, the pros and cons of a planetary protection policy on Mars. Then find a classmate whose pro and con arguments are perhaps different than your or that you might disagree with and respond to them with a few (respectful and well thought-out) sentences.
