Taking into consideration Hookes law and applying it to my job, one example would be the bending of one of our count fingers on the machine. We have metal fingers that help guide the paper down after being folded and stacked. If one of those fingers gets out of place, it can come in contact with the folding roll. The amount of force generated by the roll on the finger creates an incredible amount of stress on it, sometimes bending it to a point where it exceeds its elastic limit. This contorts it out of shape enough where it needs to be replaced. The fingers do have a certain amount of flexibility, but when the contact or force on it is great enough, Hookes law validates the extent of its proportionality limit. I feel that more research needs to be done to try and explain why materials can sometimes absorb the stress and then sometimes hit that point of no return.
