Week 2 Discussion: Organizational Structure, Power, and Applicable Theories Organization: Calhoun State Prison, Nursing Department (must use this organization)

After completing the readings and viewings complete this discussion. You will need to attach a copy or photo of your organizational chart (if you can remove the organization name that is good but if not just remember that our discussions are confidential in the course). Use the attached rubric and discussion requirements for postings.

Based on your knowledge of your organization and your organizational chart develop the following questions. 

Describe the type of organizational structure that exists in your organization. Identify at least 2 pros and 2 cons for this structure as it relates to nursing leadership and delivery of patient care.

Describe the organizational theory for your organization. How does this theory support or negate the delivery of patient care?

Describe the culture of your organization. Provide an example of something that helps to define your culture. This could be staff behavior, a policy, etc.  What would you change about the culture?   Support your view.

Thinking about ‘power’ from the readings describe what you view as ‘power.’

1. Where do you fit in the organizational chart and what is your ‘power’ base? Where does your direct supervisor fit in the organizational chart and what is their ‘power’ base ? Where does the director of nursing or chief nursing officer of your organization fit in the organizational chart and what is their ‘power’ base?
