Arizona State University Suggestions for Nativizing Native American Education Essay
Description
Many Indigenous communities find that the schools attended by their youth lacking resources for maintaining and their cultural sovereignty and revitalizing their distinctive languages and cultures. Many are attempting to better “Indigenize” their pedagogy and curriculum to maximally serve their students. Linguistic anthropologists and researchers in related fields have provided detailed studies of aspects of Native American language structure and use. Your task is to make specific suggestions about how they might be used toward this goal. I will assume that your suggestions for educational reform will be collaboratively vetted with Indigenous educators and community representatives so you need not mention the practical matters of collaboration and implementation. For this essay, you can imagine you are asked to consult a particular tribe (or a generic one) about what types of educational reforms you would recommend on the basis of our small sample of linguistic and linguistic anthropological research. So consider the articles to be the most useful as providing models for either possible content in a curriculum reform or as suggesting alternative pedagogies for teachers presenting content in the classroom. Why did you pick them and how could they be applied to educational reform? You may consider all grades from pre-K to College in this essay and you must make some recommendations for reform of both curriculum and pedagogy
Use at least one example from the readings for three of the first four areas, and–finally–a total of at least three from the fifth.
1) linguistic stereotypes, 2) Native American linguistic structures, 3) the ethnography of communication, 4) interethnic communication, and 5) language, communication and education
