Read Menconi’s “Rock Music” and Davison’s “Church Music and Imagination.” Respond to each of the following questions in a thoughtful and clear essay (typed, double-spaced, one page). Reflection Essay 3, to clarify, is made up of two one-page essays.
REFLECTION ESSAY 3: QUESTION ONE
Imagine that you are speaking with an older friend of yours who has just read the Menconi article. He is clearly upset by the article. “Every now and then,” he tells you, “I see some of those MTV videos and, well, they’re incredibly vulgar. The bottom line is that Menconi should be condemning Rock outright instead of trying to explain it away.” Do you agree with your friend or does Menconi have a good point? Explain your answer.
REFLECTION ESSAY 3: QUESTION TWO
The same friend referred to above continues his conversation by turning to the topic of music in worship services. “And another thing,” he says, “I don’t agree with Davison’s chapter. Church music doesn’t have to be highfalutin’; in fact, it should sound like decent everyday music. But what it shouldn’t sound like is Rock!” Do you agree with your friend or with Davison? Explain your answer.
