On Friday I participated in this discussion on Street Solders.  Please view the video in its entirety and comment about the details of the video.  You must also respond to each other- please be respectful of other views as it relates to this controversial topic.   As leaders in criminal justice you should have an opinion about this incident and how this issue effects policing in our communities.  I’m curious of your views? I will need 2 responses provided for my classmates I will drop them in the drop down below.

This weeks discussion brought up many interesting talking points surrounding policing. What happened to George Floyd was a tragedy and there should be some repercussions for those at fault. This first talking point that I found interesting in was how the usage of newer technologies has put police in the spotlight. There are many mixed reviews on this topic, but one thing that is imperative is the showing of the whole video. I feel that this is a big issue surrounding the formation of public opinion. I do believe that there are some issues in the action taken by the officers, but the showing of the whole video would put the entire situation it context, as well as allow people to form an opinion knowing the entirety of all the events that transpired. The second talking point that I found interesting was the creation of a universal standard. Professor Gonzales made an excellent point of how varying policies and standards leaves plenty of room for issues. With the institution of a national standard from the DOJ, there is truly no way anyone can claim that they are following policies because it would easy to analyze their actions and weigh them accordingly. The final talking point which I found interesting was when discussions turned towards systemic racism and discrimination. I do agree that there are some foundations in our system that could be rooted in racism, but there is much more to it than addressing policing. If our country’s most sacred doctrine, the Declaration of Independence, truly outlines a racist system as stated by two of the speakers, then the problem goes beyond policing. Perhaps the better question is how can the system as a whole, not just policing, bettered for all if there is truly a problem.

After watching the video on Street Soldiers, I think that it makes sense to make other officers responsible if the incident matches the extremities of George Flloyd. During the incident of George Flloyd, I think as a country we can all agree that what took place was appalling and should not have happened. The officers that stood by and allowed a colleague to hold down Flloyd should hold some responsibility because they could’ve defused the situation and Flloyd could’ve been alive today. However, not every incident that an officer is going to face in their line of duty will be handled with as much scrutiny from the public or will end in the same manner. What I mean by it depending on the incident is the case of Kim Potter and Daunte Wright. In this incident during a traffic stop, Potter and her colleague Anthony Luckey pulled Duante over for an infraction but upon searching up his license plate discovered that there had been a warrant out for his arrest on a weapons charge. While Luckey was handcuffing Wright, Wright managed to get back into his vehicle. With quick movements, Potter called out that she was going to tase Wright but instead of reaching for her left holster that was carrying the taser, she reached for her right carrying her 9mm service weapon. Instead of tasing Wright, she fatally shot him. She was later found guilty by the people. In this incident, I don’t think that Officer Anthony Luckey should be held responsible for the actions of his colleague and he wasn’t. The only person that caused any action or harm to Wright was Potter and she now faces the consequences of her actions. My question to the class is, what are the main differences between Flloyd and Wright? By my explanation alone, only Chauvin should’ve been charged and prosecuted with the death of Flloyd, not the other officers as well. Why as a system or as a society do we get to pick and choose who gets prosecuted and who doesn’t? My opinion is this, we shouldn’t be cherry-picking over which officers get prosecuted for the wrongful deaths of citizens. We shouldn’t allow the public or the media to decide who gets prosecuted and who doesn’t just because one is more publicized than another. We get our information from news sources and social media, we should be seeing all incidences, not incidences that the media wants to cover and choose because they know it will influence public opinion. From our own internal investigations (There’s a reason for Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) existing), we as a policing body should be able to come up with our own reasons as to why officers are going to have criminal charges filed against them without the use or involvement of outside propaganda. It’s one thing to hear feedback from the public on making changes, it’s entirely another thing to biggy back off of trends or propaganda for one’s personal agenda. Nothing will actually be accomplished if one is to follow one line of thinking. Although I do not like that the other officers in the Flloyd incident were simply bystanders, by the public definition and supporters of the BLM movement in trying to achieve justice, we cannot only prosecute them and then let Officer Anthony Luckey walk for doing a similar action in another incident. It is hypocritical.
