Description

https://www.centreofthecell.org/wp-content/uploads/IAHB-challenge-1.pdf

For this Cardiovascular lab activity, you are to read the lab content from the link above and conduct the EXTENSION ACTIVITY. However, I am modifying the table. You are to chart the following: (Have 4 columns.)

1) Type of Exercise – 2) Heart Rate BEFORE – 3) Heart Rate AFTER – 4) Duration of Exercise – be sure to be consistent, either select 1, 2, or 3 minutes. (Remember, you must perform the activity for the entire time, and you want to be robust with the activity the entire time. 1 minute is very good to select, but for those who feel they are able to sustain a consistent intense level of activity for 2 minutes (SAFELY), then please do. For those who may be the guru of fitness, (SAFELY) you may attempt the full 3 minutes, of intense activity, but do so, only if you feel you are able.

To complete this activity, 1 minute of intense repetitive activity is perfect, and what we normally conduct when this activity is performed on campus in the lab. Smile

You are to select 3 types of exercise activity:

Examples: walking, jogging, sit-ups, jumping-jacks, lifting weights, lifting up cans of food or water/milk gallon jugs, etc. Be creative, you have flexibility with the exercise activity. Be sure to perform the activity safely, do not over exert yourself.

CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION!…. Some individuals who contracted COVID-19 have lingering symptoms. Some of the frequent symptoms have been shortness of breath, and or, tachycardia which have lasted for months, and for some the symptoms have lasted for over a year. If you have either of those ongoing symptoms, then you are to complete this lab for 15 – 30 seconds. Or, for how long you are able to engage in the activity you selected.  I would recommend you select the walking option, and your walking should not be intense for those who have the Long-Hauler COVID symptoms mentioned.

Within this Area, you are to answer the following 5 questions: (you must itemize your responses and type directly into the forum, do not upload a document.) AND, you are to comment to one of your classmate’s entry. (Your commentary to your classmate’s entry should be with ‘added value’. Do not type in a simple ‘good job’, or ‘nice’. Instead contribute to their post, by either sharing a similar experience, perhaps sharing some advice, or sharing how their post has impacted you.

1. Identify the 3 types of exercise activity you are going to select.

2. Hypothesize (take an educated guess) BEFORE you physically perform this lab activity, which form of the 3 exercises you anticipate on conducting, would result in the greatest heart rate increase, which would have the least heart rate increase.

3. (Perform your exercise activities) a. Identify whether you accept or reject your hypothesis in question #2.

                                                   b. Summarize your findings from the data you collected. (You do not need to disclose personal specific numbers – it is important individuals are able to maintain a level of health data privacy.{ Remember, you must be discrete with the healthcare information of your patients.} Smile)

4. What did you learn about yourself during your exercise activity.

5. Based upon this lab activity you conducted, what would you recommend to a 600 pound patient, who is thinking about Heart Health, but is concerned about further damaging the cartilage within their lower extremity joints?

…..6 – Don’t forget to respond to one of your peers. Wink

Additional Information: A great lesson to share!

Class, one of your classmates asked if they could include their data table with the 5 itemized responses….. a perfect question to ask….so we can all learn a very important lesson. (Of course, you will learn it in your programs, but since the opportunity has presented itself – why not be introduced to it now. WinkSmile) See part of my response below:

I purposely did not request students to insert their table of data because the data is personal health information. It is extremely important that we begin to learn that any health information is to remain private – in agreement with HIPPA:  Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

HIPPA is a set of rules which were created to protect the privacy of individuals records, information, and especially their health results. For violations of HIPPA rights, people have been terminated from their jobs Sealed, and employers are fined severely.
