Group Topic: Group Therapy

In group therapy, one or more therapists collaborate with several patients simultaneously. Students should concentrate on the group’s structure and abilities rather than the environment. Group therapy is an excellent tool for managing and directing treatment. During a group therapy session, the leader’s primary responsibility is to foster meaningful discussion and successfully address and manage any disputes. Research-based methodologies and strong leadership abilities can be combined to guide group conversations.

Goals for The Group

One of the primary aims of group therapy is to help people develop a sense of belonging and connection by helping them understand one another. Sharing similar experiences serves as a repository for this goal. Second, it is critical to have clear objectives for the process. Aside from helping participants better understand and connect in a group, these objectives aim to help them improve their behavior due to participating in group therapy.

Agenda

1. Informal Mood Check: Informal mood checks can be in the form of going around and asking group members how they feel today.
2. Establish Goals: Within the context of the plan/topic, each member should consider at least one personal goal they have for the session. Setting goals can be done by asking for each member to go around and complete this sentence: For this topic, I would like to learn _________ or improve my skills to: _____________.

Group facilitation

1. Group counseling should be separated into action, discussion, and conclusion. The activity part introduces the day’s conversation topic. During the chat portion, you can ask open-ended questions about the topic and learn more about the member. The conclusion part is used to summarize the essential ideas discussed.
2. In leading a psycho-educational group, the group promotes self-learning to improve behavior or attitude to cure a disorder. I would focus on life skills learning and practice as a group facilitator for this group. A range of activities should be included in each session to educate and inform patients. Use “hands-on” tools such as handouts and worksheets in sessions and at home to succeed at this task.
3. The learning experiences could also be varied by combining individual and small group activities. It is essential to keep track of the progress made in therapy and change the strategy accordingly.

All the above parts of group facilitation are essential in the plan as they will help in the mental counseling of the members. Hence, the members will have a sense of belonging through understanding.
