  • What are the proposed advantages of a national identification card?
  • What are some of the possible disadvantages of a national identification card?
  • If a system of national identification cards had been in place prior to September 11, 2001, could it have prevented the terrorist attacks?

My peerWhen one thinks of national identity cards, we can’t help but think of social security cards as this is one card that people are required to have. It is also one of the most used forms of identification when asked to provide two or more forms of identification. After conducting research on how national identity cards are used, the one example that I found was that the citizens in the European Union (EU), use it as way to travel to regions and countries (European Sources Online). This reminds me of passports that U.S. citizens have to obtain to travel and now the RealID listed on our driver’s license to be able to enter certain federal sites and for air travel within the country. I see the argument from both sides on how a national identification system can work but, in my opinion, I think the government is justified in it. In my opinion, the state-issued driver’s license, and IDs with the federal RealID mandated for each one is in fact a national identification system. As for safeguarding the personal information that is contained in a high-tech national identity card, is is plausible as we now have an agency that oversees keeping the public safe. There are also data-monitoring companies that can monitor the data to ensure that it isn’t being stolen. There have also been new developments in software to keep cybercriminals out and ensuring the safety of personal information. When it comes to personal information such as medical records, criminal history, and mental health problems, yes, criminal history and mental health problems should be encoded on them. I do not say this lightly but if we have learned anything from past incidences, it is had people known about past criminal history or mental health problems, many deaths could have been adverted.  The advantages of a national identification card are that every state and personnel will be able to access information on the card. It will also ensure that people are in the country legally. It will also help government agencies keep a track of known criminals. At the same time there are disadvantages to the card. The first being the constitutional rights of Americans being followed and some could think this is wrong. The second would be if the card is stolen, thus the person’s whole life can be stolen. As is the case, the advantages and disadvantages need to be considered to make the proper choice but, in the end, not everyone will be pleased with the decision made.            When it comes to having a system of national identification cards in place before September 11, 2001, the question at hands asks if the terrorist attacks could have been prevented, and I think that yes they could have. The government could have seen that the terrorist was in the country longer than they should have been. Since the terrorist cells were known to the government coming from different countries, these cards could have activated to show they were at high risk of being terrorist and needed to be kept an eye on. I do know what this implies but when trying to keep the public safe and the fact that all states require a drivers license or ID with the RealID, we are essentially already doing that but also keeping the rights of people.ReferencesEuropean Sources Online. my classmate    . peerA national identification card is a form identification with a person’s name, picture   and address. The identification cards are issued to a citizen or eligible resident when they register to vote. This card is an electoral document used as proof of identify when voting, this card is a primary form of identification. When 9/11, happened, United States and other countries decided to issue National Identification Cards as a way of  differentiating  terrorist’s  from the law abiding population.(2022, Christensen)                      National Identification Cards can be used to fight illegal employment. The cards can determine if the individual on the card and not an imposter. The cards can help employers eliminate and have clear pathway to a worry free employee  verification.   The card system can detect if a person can be eligible to in the United States and are legal.                It is impossible  to protect the IDS because of technology and hackers. The IDS are not 100 percent and information that is stored can be shared . Identity theft   can go further in the personal, financial , medical  history of a person, it also can lead into debt. Medical and Mental health  records should not be stored due to Hepa but if the individual waives there right ,they can do so. I personally don’t agree with that because the law is the law. Criminal records on the other hand should be disclosed because that’s the reason why National Identification Cards excited.                Advantage-Less paperwork for the individual employment, bank, medical and other id uses purpose, (2013, Researchomatic)                Disadvantage-The id is not 100 percent safe. Can be hacked, duplicated                I do not think so, the paperwork, the visas the process and requirements of flying required the same on 9/11, the only thing that should help back then was United States did not put their guard down, in my opinion. Technology  is easier but physical man power presence is much better.References:(https://www.historicalindex.org/What-is-a-national-id-card.htm(https://www.researchomatic.com/The-Advantages-And-Disadvantage)
