Savannah State University Donut Operator Essay
Description
For this assignment, you will complete a 1500-word video critique”>complete a 1500-word video critique. The videos that you will critique were created by Donut Operator, a YouTube personality with over 2 million followers and a net worth of $1.3 million. He is a former police officer and SWAT team member, and covers the latest news regarding police activity in the United States. He is a pro-gun conservative that also served as a writer for the police advocacy group, Blue Lives Matter. Now, let me be very clear here…I am not trying to promote the trolling of this guy’s channel, nor am I trying to disprove his videos or encourage the harassment of him, his community, or his family. He is a normal human person with a family, just living the life that he wants to live. No need for shade or hate.
Go to his channel and select ONE video of a police breakdown on a police shooting. He has several videos in which he critiques police shootings from the perspective of the police officers. I am a firm believer in seeing all sides of a story, so for this assignment:
- select one breakdown video from the Donut Operator
- watch it, several times and take notes if you need to, talk to your friends, explore and digest the topic
- research the incident in question with multiple reliable sources, watch out for fake news!
- write a 1500 word or 3-page essay (typed/double spaced), offer your own critique of the incident AND that of the Donut Operator’s
- CITE YOUR WORK! (Any format/bullet points acceptable with detail)
- complete a work cited page, 4 outside sources minimum (in addition to the video)
- submit paper and work cited to the drop box by December 8th!
Maybe you agree with him, maybe you don’t. Either way, I want you to write a summary that has a THESIS STATEMENT.”>THESIS STATEMENT. (what are you trying to say!) Your critique must be documented with citations, and a work cited page. Any format is acceptable. Many of you will be drawn to the high profile situations, such as George Floyd or Kyle Rittenhouse, that is okay, but I encourage you to try your hand a lesser known incident.
What I am expecting is that you will objectively review all of the evidence and then decide for yourself what took place. This assignment is about seeing all sides of a challenging situation, evaluating the evidence, forming an educated opinion, and then retelling the story for others…the same way that we handle all historic research. Do not take it personal! I am not expecting you to have a completely unbiased opinion, nothing in history is unbiased. Everything in history is open to interpretation. So ask yourself…how do you want generations to come to learn about these events that took place during your lifetime?
