University of California Los Angeles Feminism and Sexual Harrassment Reflection

University of California Los Angeles Feminism and Sexual Harrassment Reflection

University of California Los Angeles Feminism and Sexual Harrassment Reflection

Description

For this first Module Activity, I’d like you to reflect on what you learned in the module, but instead of writing a plain paper, I’d like your reflection to take a bit of a creative form.

You have some options to choose from below. No matter which option you choose, be sure to give a detailed, comprehensive sense of what you learned from Module 1, and be sure to include discussion, concepts, and quotes from at least 5 of the module readings.

  • a 500-word reflection letter, addressed to me (“Dear Dr. K.”), discussing specific readings, statistics, concepts, and quotes. (Images are fine to include too!)

my previous work:

After analyzing the significant ideas of the readings, I believe feminism is rooted in the perception that women are disadvantaged or oppressed when comparing them to women. In addition, feminism believes that women’s oppression is unjustified or illegitimate in various ways. I think gender equitability is healthier for everybody with this perspective in mind. For a comprehensive understanding, improvements in women’s reproductive rights, protection from violence, and access to healthcare have significant effects on an individual’s well-being and life expectancy, especially children, since feminism challenges inappropriate gender norms. I believe feminism materialized through caregiving sectors and human capital investment that enhances public health focus and capacity.

“Why Everyday Feminism Is for Everyone” by Sandra Kim and “Feminism Is for Everybody” by Bell Hooks share the idea that feminism is a crucial movement to end sexist oppression, exploitation, and sexism in general. Both readings have a perspective that the feminist movement is open to all individuals and that it recognizes the natural diversity among women. In today’s cultures, some gender roles face both women and men (Kim, 2012). For example, women are expected to be nurturing, be polite, dress in feminine ways, and be accommodating.

Comparing both Bell Hooks and Sandra Kim’s readings, what cut across them is that feminism is for everybody and everyone. Feminism gives more insights to include the perspectives and voice of each individual who experience dominance in society, both men and women. Men are also emphasized to conform to their gender roles in society. However, these readings have no differences since they share most ideas (Hooks, 2000). In conclusion, the critical term I can bring to bear on them is patriarchy and matriarchy.

Kaylin Haught’s poem “God Says Yes to Me,” posits a practical orthodoxy through which every speech should be filtered, and individual experience explained. Its original sin version is the significance of various identity groups over others. To abide by God, individuals need to confess and subsequently order their thoughts and live their lives away from those sins (Haught, 1995). The sins go deep into their psyche, particularly if they are male or straight or white; a profound version is required.

In the video “Confessions of a Bad Feminist,” Roxane Gay discusses how she agrees with various values related to feminism, and this assertion would make her a feminist. With this in mind, having justice and equality for women is an essential principle that defines feminism. Roxane Gay says that she has realized that her perspective includes that men and women are equal; hence, they deserve to control their bodies and have the same rights, like being paid the same rate as men (Gay, 2015). At 1:36-2:11, Roxane passionately states that she has particular truths to be self-evident.

The poem “Ain’t I A Woman?” investigates how the story of women’s rights advocate and 19th-century abolitionist Sojourner Truth has become an influential and iconic feminist story. It further explores intersectionality scholarship and its continued story relevance for contemporary feminist debates. Her words give more insights into how feminist scholars can utilize them in various political contexts, times, and places (Sojourner Truth Memorial Committee, 2022). It is attention-grabbing how she acknowledges that everyone has their unique experiences of oppression and discrimination. We should consider anything and everything that can marginalize individuals- gender, sexual orientation, race, class, and physical ability.

Sexual harassment includes any unwelcome, unsolicited sexual verbal or physical behavior; it also includes making inflammatory remarks about gender, such as stating derogatory things regarding women as a group. Sexual harassment includes sexually inappropriate advances and solicitations for sexual favors at workplaces or schools. Sexual harassment isn’t all about sexual behavior or targeting of a specific person. Negative remarks on women as a group is also a good example of sexual harassment.

Sexual assault is a crime that encompasses any sort of sexual contact with another person against their consent. As sexual assault includes any kind of sexual interaction with those who do not or cannot consent, it would mean sexual contact without approval from an underage as defined by the law, a person who is an intellectual handicap, someone who is unconscious due to alcohol or drugs, or otherwise unable to respond.

Family violence, simply put, is the Use of aggression, threats, coercion, or intimidation against a family member or partner. There is a power imbalance when abusive behavior or aggression is used to dominate others in such relationships. Family violence can occur in every family interaction, including between couples, inside families, and against the elderly and disabled. When Byron’s dad had to yell at his wife, Byron’s mother, every time they were in an argument, both Byron and his mother were terrified and uncomfortable. This said, it is worth noting that Gender disparity between men and women and firmly held notions about masculinity play a significant role in men’s significant level of violence against women in relationships.
