BASF The Hegemonic Masculinity in Peaky Blinders Television Series Analysis
Description
Your paper will evaluate at least three episodes from a television show of your choosing to examine the role and significance of race/class/gender.
- The first step is to write the research question, which involves selecting the television show you will write about and the concept to which you will apply to that show. Choose one of the hegemonic masculinitys (Hegemonic masculinity, as summarized by Trujillo, is characterized by five elements: “(1) physical force and control, (2) occupational achievement, (3) familial patriarchy, (4) frontiersmanship, and (5) heterosexuality” (p. 291). and discuss whether the hegomonic masculinity is being reinforced or challenged
- The second step is to write the introduction to your paper. (Begin the introduction by providing basic information about the show’s production,
including network, years in production, showrunner and/or executive producer. If the show is
based on a movie, book, or anything else (e.g. remake/spinoff of something), provide that the
basic information as well.
Second, cite an article on gender, race, or class in the show that relates to the hegemonic
concept you are using to analyze the show. This article must be from a source such as an
academic journal article (an article you would find on Google Scholar), a newspaper
(example: LA Times, New York Times, etc.) or a magazine/online commentary (examples:
Flow TV, tv.avclub.com, remezcla.com, Rolling Stone, Huffington Post, The Hollywood
Reporter, Variety, etc.)Third, compare/contrast the argument in that article with the argument you intend to make in
your paper. - The third step is to write the section titled “Concepts, Theories and Methods.“( Begin the “Concepts, Theories, and Methods” section by stating which episodes from which
seasons you analyzed, and state how you collected the information from each of the episodes. The second paragraph should define the concept you chose to use to analyze the episodes from
your chosen television show. Define all the elements of the concept. For example, “hegemonic
masculinity” includes five aspects, and so you would discuss each of those five aspects when
defining your concept. You must cite a legitimate source from where the information about that
concept was found, and you must cite that source by author name. The third paragraph should preface your audience analysis section (but do not analyze the
audience at this point). Simply describe the audience demographics (number of viewers, age,
sex, and race). - The fourth step is to write “Analysis Part I” and “Analysis Part II.“(The textual analysis section investigates three to five (3–5) television episodes from your
television show by applying elements of your chosen concept to various scenes in those
episodes.
Write one separate paragraph for each episode you analyze in the textual analysis section.State specific examples from the information you have gathered from your audience
analysis source. - The final step is to write the “Conclusion.” (Begin the conclusion by re–stating your research question.Answer the research question by providing a summary of the results of your textual analysis and a summary of your analysis of the show’s audience.Briefly comment on what the results mean for gender and society.
