As we enter in the final week of our clinical experiences and classes, I’m sure we have all been looking at job opportunities as soon to be Nurse Practitioners. I am from the state of Maine and have seen many job opportunities for Nurse Practitioners. Our biggest healthcare group in Maine is called MaineHealth. Right now, there are currently 87 Nurse Practitioner positions available right now. This gives me a wide range of different options to start my career as a provider. It been incredibly helpful to use the website indeed.com to be able to filter exactly what I am looking for in a job including salary, benefits, hours, and location. It’s important to know that when applying for jobs and going in for interviews, you are the one in the driver’s seat. Meaning if you don’t like what they are offering for salary or benefits, you can negotiate these terms to your needs. If the employer is unwilling to meet your needs that you are requesting, this may be a sign that this job may not be the right fit (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2022).

One job position in particular has been interesting me and that is a primary care office position in Windham, Maine where I live. The job goes on to describe that it is a newly renovated office they are working at and there is one Pediatrician and two APPs combined they have 79 years of total experience in primary care. This makes me even more interested because they would be able to help teach me as a new provider and would gain their knowledge and wisdom which is so valuable. The problem is they are requiring two years’ experience as a Nurse Practitioner (which most jobs I have been looking at are requiring at least 2 years’ experience). Full benefits are included (MaineHealth, 2022). This job would be perfect if they were hiring new graduates. I plan on applying anyway and make sure they know I am very motivated to learn from them and would appreciate any guidance given from the established provider’s decades of experience.

In the area where I live, northern CA, the most available opportunities are working as an employee. The geographic area is saturated with clinics from prominent organizations and private owners. If you choose to work at an established private clinic owned by someone else, you can have autonomy over patient care. I have not found any private clinics that are hiring new nurse practitioners. The current opportunities are listed below.
Sutter Health has positions with two years of experience required. The place is a collaborative practice that involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of various medical conditions. The jobs require 40 hours per week. Benefits are not listed for this position (Sutter Health, 2022).
Kaiser Permanente has positions that require 1-year of previous experience as an NP. This position requires assessments and data collection for patient advocacy. You will consult a supervising physician and are required to work 32 hours per week. Benefits are not listed (Kaiser Permanente, 2022).
