In Proposal Argument 2, we will explain the importance of solving a problem or addressing an issue that has national or international impact. We must choose a topic from the list provided below. The paper will follow the basic outline of an argument that we applied to Proposal Argument 1: introduction, background, lines of argument, alternative arguments, and conclusion. We will not use first person singular (“I/me”) but might us the collective “we.”
Purpose:
The paper will present our proposal about specific change that needs to take place at a national or international level. The thesis will propose a specific solution, and we will support the thesis with credible evidence throughout the paper.
Research requirement:
We will use at least five (5) credible sources from journals, books, magazines, or newspapers. All of the sources can be electronic, but please limit yourself to one (1) .com source out of the minimum five (5). We may use more than five (5) sources.
Intended audience:
Let’s assume the readers are familiar with the specific problem/issue at the paper’s center. They want to learn about a reasonable solution to the problem/issue.
Please develop a proposal that addresses one of the following issues:
Access to mental health resources
The high cost of college
The effect of the pandemic on education (K-12 or college)
The effect of the pandemic on small businesses
The effect of the pandemic on workers
The effect of social media use on mental health
Social inequities: education, income, employment, discrimination, etc.
Climate change: pollution, waste, energy sources, etc.
Veterans’ issues: mental health, homelessness, employment, the transition to civilian life, etc.
How to have difficult conversations (or disagreements) without fighting
Key performance criteria:
- We meet the basic assignment requirements.
- We use a topic from the list provided.
- We address the assigned intended audience.
- The essay focuses on an arguable problem/issue at a specific and local level.
- The thesis (proposal) proposes a specific solution to a specific problem/issue.
- The argument follows the basic structure of argument.
- The thesis (proposal) is supported with detail and specific examples from credible, college-level sources.
- The argument considers all sides of an issue—including alternative proposals—and uses a balanced, considerate, and inclusive tone (no “you” use).
