ALEN

Hello class, for this week’s discussion, I chose the article titled Wound Practice & Research.

1. Identify the clinical question and describe each portion of the question

P- the population that was used in this research was older adults with an average age of 67.2 years old

I- the intervention used was to teach older adults how to avoid pressure injuries and what they can do themselves without the assistance of a nurse or health care provider. A Paitent- centered pressure injury prevention care bundle, was given to the older adults.

C- A t-test was used before and after to see what changes there were in the pressure injuries after the older adults were given the Patient-centered pressure injury prevention care bundle (PPIPCB). Patient satisfaction was measured before and after their stay at the hospital on a patient who was given eh PPIPCB and patients who were not.

O- The outcome of this research shows that allowing patients to learn how to avoid pressure injuries, there was a significant positive outcome. 98.8% of the people used for this research were greatly satisfied with being given knowledge on how to make their stay at the hospital more comfortable.

T- The time that this research took place was from November 2019- December 2019.

2. This study was done so that the elderly population could take care of their pressure injuries or avoid them entirely. The elderly population is known to have a pressure injury when staying at any medical facility. This study was done in Australia as was done on 80 patients. The average age of the patients was 67.2 years old, and was done for a period of two months. The researchers did a before and after of giving the PPIPCB by measuring the patient’s satisfaction before and after their stay and compared it to previous years’ patients. The outcome shows that these 80 patients were greatly satisfied with their stay at the healthcare facility, and results showed that 98.8 percent of the patients were happy with learning how to avoid or take care of pressure injuries. I would apply this to my practice by remembering this article. If I am to have an elderly patient who is under my care, I will remember to make their stay at the health care facility more comfortable I will teach them how to avoid pressure injuries during their admission.

3. The use of quantitative research works well with the subject of pressure injuries because the elderly population is also known not to listen to instructions. This research show’s that when elderly patients when given instruction on how to make their stay more comfortable, they will apply their newfound knowledge so that they can avoid pressure injuries altogether.

AMANDA

I chose the study about the prevalence of falls in frail elderly users of ambulatory assistive devices. The population is frail elderly adults who use ambulatory assistive devices, and the comparison group was frail elderly adults who do not use ambulatory assistive devices. The intervention was recording how many falls each group experienced in the previous six months. Therefore, the clinical question must have been something like “Do frail elderly adults who use ambulatory assistive devices fall less frequently than those who do not?” The outcome of the study found that the group that used the ambulatory assistive devices had more falls than the group who did not use assistive devices (Cruz, et al., 2020, p. 510).

The study was done to verify the prevalence of falls in this population after previous studies had shown a higher prevalence of falls in users of ambulatory assistive devices (Cruz, et al., 2020, p. 510). The study was conducted by interviewing patients about the frequency of their falls in the previous 6 months and their opinions about using their assistive devices (Cruz, et al., 2020, p. 511). They found that the group that used assistive devices reported fewer accidental falls after they started using the assistive devices, but that this group still had more falls than the group that did not use assistive devices (Cruz, et al., 2020, p. 511). The key was that when this group did fall they were not using their assistive devices. In fact, only 3 participants reported falls while using their assistive devices (Cruz, et al., 2020, p. 512).

The methods used to record the number of falls met the needs of the study and was appropriate for the participant population. It allowed reporting over time with an established relationship between participant and interviewer.
