Is racism still prevalent in sports today?

Overall, there was an increase in racist acts in the United States in 2018. In 2019, it was found that there was a significant decrease in racist acts in sport in the United States and internationally “from 52 acts in 2018 to just 25 in 2019. However, internationally, there were 131 occurrences in 2019 compared to 137 in 2018.” Most of the acts happen during soccer games with 89% of them happening in Europe. It’s nice to see that there is a decrease in the amount of racist acts as a whole, but the evidence shows that racism is still prevalent in sports today.

How are stereotypes impacting the sports world today?

For as long as the sport has existed, the concept of an individual’s race and ethnicity has been a problem when it comes to playing and accessing the sport in general. In today’s society, the topic of racism in sports is still there but also the issue of gender is growing issue too. This goes to people thinking that certain athletes will play better than others because of their race and how some athletes should be able to compete at a certain level of a sport while others should not be able to or their level should be looked down on because of their gender. Sport is a field that is constantly changing and these stereotypes are still present and create a certain stigma around the issue of race, ethnicity, and gender but still leave the question of how much of an impact these stereotypes actually have on the sports world.
