Servant leadership is a leadership style which focuses on providing the “followers” with the tools, skills, and resources, necessary to achieve a common goal. One way to demonstrate servant leadership as a leader, is to inspire your followers to willingly follow and create progress towards a common goal as opposed to mandating direction. Another way is to provide support by putting your followers’ needs first, before your own. One interesting thing I learned about student leadership from the topics is that it has been practiced throughout history. One of the most famous practitioners was Jesus Christ. He was an excellent example of servant leadership because he put the needs of his apostles before his own. I believe that by putting others’ needs ahead of our own in any situation will fit into Grand Canyon University’s Christian worldview.

This week’s topic resources were full of excellent information. In the article leadership, leadership styles, and servant leadership the article talked about the “leadership effectiveness in the eyes of followers is closely tied to the leader being driven, able to inspire, and prioritize needs, which in turn produces a sense of safety and calm for followers” (Gandolfi et al. 2018). This speaks volumes to my everyday professional life where I work. I work in the defense industry, and my biggest project is very chaotic due to schedule and the fact it’s a first-time-ever type of structure built. I see the ineffectiveness of leaders that do not inspire and look at employees as numbers and not people. You can see it on the faces of the employees, and I feel for them. Reading more in-depth into servant leadership will help reinforce what I already believed that my team is the driver, and I am there to serve them and try my hardest to bring the best out of them. My success in my professional life is directly tied to the team. If they are successful, effective, and become a team that can run themselves, I’ve done something right and meaningful. I’d hope that could be an example of another effective way of leading in my workplace.

This will help me think about how I can be a better husband, father, and friend. I think this advice will help build my integrity to keep me in check. It’s essential to be the calm in a sea of madness to those around you when I need that I have beliefs and the spirit of my mother to help when I need that calm.
