Essay #2: Disease and epidemiology
For the bacterial disease (Streptococcal Pharyngitis) you described in the first essay, in terms of pathogenicity, describe the epidemiology and populations. Epidemiology is how many/where/who/why?
Remember this is epidemiology I want to see numbers, graphs and tables. This is different from the pathogenicity essay. Here you are talking about who and where not what and how. You are encouraged to include graphs and figures but must describe the data from them in the text in your own words (don’t just say this figure shows the number of cases of TB in the US turn the graph into numbers and tell me what they are).To gain points you must describe in detail what the images show.
Essay #3: Spillover
Chose a spillover or emerging disease, one which has emerged from animals and into humans in the past 30 years. It can be any disease. You need to explain the nature of the spillover event in detail.
Where did it come from, what animal/country? What underlying factors facilitated spillover and spread? How many people were sick? What made the spillover worse? What did we do? What wasn’t done? What could we do differently next time? Will there be a next time? What are scientists doing? What could they do next time? Etc. Give examples, be comprehensive, provide sources.
