University of Memphis Changing Workplace and Workforce Dynamics Discussion
Description
Discussion Board 1: The Changing Workplace and Workforce Dynamics
I always begin our study and this first discussion board on the topic of “workplace of the future” or something like that. Our current situation provokes this discussion in a bit of a different direction. We have been dealing with and responding to COVID-19 for about two years (as far as workplace disruption and adaptation). As it stands now in early 2022, we are moving into a different stage, disruption lessening somewhat but adaptation ongoing and continuing for a long time! I want you to think about that as well as give some thought to the enduring, permanent ways that the workplace has been and will continue to be changed moving forward. As we study different aspects of individual and team work behavior and interpersonal relations each week, the goal is that we all develop a productive perspective as we learn from each other!
These two short articles from 2020 are still relevant and their principles are enduring…please read Forbes 9/14/2020
and check out this short video,
. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have started to experience another related phenomenon–an extreme worker shortage, sometimes called the “Great Resignation.” Often misunderstood, this is not a simple problem with one solution! Check out these two articles from Business Insider
(worker shortage) and from NPR
. After reading all of this, offer your reaction to these trends and ideas and if possible share an aspect noted in these sources that you have personally seen or experienced (and how) with your work or the work of others that you are familiar with. In your discussion be as specific as possible, and the same specificity in your responses to your classmates. This will be more informative and it will let me know that you have actually watched/read the sources.
