Hello class,As we dive further into evidence-based practice, it is time we talk more about the actual research behind the given issues. But first we need to differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research. According to Vinson (2019) quantitative research puts research, change, correlation, and effect into numbers using numerical data and statistical analysis whereas qualitative research is the research of words, emotions, meaning, experience, and theory. Qualitative research is research of opinion and thoughts, intangible matters. Completing an interview with a set of open-ended questions to induce dialogue of the participant and the researcher works well in a private controlled setting. I initially spoke of opioid abuse and healthcare professionals in week two as my significant clinical issue. Having participants with a history of opioid abuse or participants who have firsthand knowledge of the abuse, talk openly in a safe setting could unearth a wealth of knowledge (qualitative). Or we could research the statistics of opioid abuse among healthcare workers or talk about how many nurses have experienced drug diversion? We could separate the statistics by race, sex and even education level. This sort of data would be grouped as quantitative in nature. As a researcher, I could choose to incorporate both types of data. I could do my surveys and interviews to “see” the person behind the disease process, to create a better understanding for the reader while listing the statistics of drug diversion issues as well to create a mixed method research study. Which situation (your group project topics) in week two would best correlate with a qualitative or quantitative approach? I am interested in hearing your thoughts about your projects.
