Theme Q:  How do you balance the trade-offs in the use of force to combat nontraditional security threats?

Refer to your Chapter’s Policy scenario  by using the information and theoretical concepts through your Chapter (see Chapter Review).  The Questions at the end of the passage are supposed to guide you to form your own approach in policy be creative by using the theoretical concepts  from Ch. 6 and do further Research on Afghanistan conflict if you may.

What diplomatic approach you’ll execute?  How do you balance the trade-offs in the use of force to combat nontraditional security threats? Please read the Chapter key points and terminology and use it in your ‘executive policy journal’ as a Diplomatic Thinker assess the political problem and suggest your own policy approach by using the terminology from this chapter.  Support your thoughts in the ‘Journal summary’ with extensive qualitative research using Think Tanks or articles online; see also ‘Pages’ tab has some suggestions on Links for further research. Please note that the Policy Perspective Assgt #6  its at pg. 172 or 6:1  scroll in the textbook to find it; it is not listed on the Contents of the textbook.  Also, you can take the ‘simulation challenge test’ to assess your ‘leadership in military and counterterrorism decision making’ as a ‘President of the United States’.  

Questions and Guidelines to Consider: 

How do you respond to the possibility of civil war in Afghanistan?

Do you postpone the withdrawal of American forces? That would likely stop the Taliban advances but perhaps put off the inevitable when U.S. troops do leave.

Do you leave Afghanistan to its fate? That would be popular at home, but it would risk the reemergence of anti-U.S. forces that America intervened to topple after the 9/11 attacks.

How do you balance the competing domestic and international pressures in confronting nontraditional security threats?

Evaluate the ‘Problem’ by reading  ‘Background Political situation’
