For example, some organizations make it a point to donate a percentage of their profits every year to a cause in need, such as Fire House Subs donating to fire departments. Another example of how companies can gain trust is through exemplifying within their business model they are socially responsible stewards. For instance, as a previous employee of Fidelity Investments, I know they do not offer a commission to their sales staff to prevent unsuitable products from being sold to those leaning on the trust and expertise of the salesperson. Conversely, companies such as Well Fargo damaged their reputation by implementing such intense sales quotas for their sales staff that many staff members opened fake accounts for their customers. Furthermore, organizations such as BP lost the community’s trust following one of the largest oil spills in the United States. I will ensure my organization maintains a positive reputation in the community by maintaining complete transparency about how our investment advice is calculated. Furthermore, we will never recommend an investment product we own. Lastly, we will always fight for the employee seeking knowledge, motivation, and advice on how to retire with grace and dignity. Response: 2One of the key take aways I found was that he highlighted the skill of being a good listener. in order to learn, we must listen. I feel that sometimes we get caught up in our own thoughts and our own message, that we forget to slow down and be silent. I feel that if we aren’t taking time to truly listen to someone, we might miss out on helpful information. This skill does not only serve in the business world, but also in interpersonal communication. Another piece of advice that he gave was to take opportunities when they present themselves. He said “no ones going to give you a handout” (Colangelo). This is helpful advice because I feel that successful people realized this and learned to work hard to gain success. I have a “no one’s going to help you unless you help yourself” attitude, and I feel that Colangelo’s message also aligns with this mindset. It is especially difficult for me to make decisions which conflict with my better judgement. I feel that almost every time I have made a decision that goes against my ethics, based on the popular opinion, it never worked out well for me. I feel that even if things did work out well, I wouldn’t be happy with myself. I would know I did something which I, internally, am not okay with. It’s not a good feeling to know I went against my own values to achieve success. As a business person, I would take into consideration all the people who will be affected by the decision. Often times decisions are made without taking into the consideration of the well-being of the business’ employees and are made for the financial gain of the company. Also, I realize that not everyone may be in the agreement with the decision, therefor It would have to be made, so that the greater good be accomplished.respond 3
