Walden University Special Populations in The Community Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a social science discussion question and need support to help me learn.
Special populations require additional supervision and/or resources in order to manage them effectively in the community. For example, sex offenders are required to report their work and home address for the public sex offender registry. Substance abusers may have to submit to drug tests, and violent offenders or offenders with mental illness may be required to participate in mental health programming. While the supervision of such offenders is strict, there is still a high level of public concern about the reintegration of such offenders into the community.
In this Discussion, you consider the unique perspectives and challenges related to the reintegration of special populations into the community.
To prepare:
Select a population among the following to focus on for this Discussion:
- Sex offenders
- Violent offenders
- Drug offenders
- Offenders with mental illness
Post a response that addresses the following:
- Imagine you are a homeowner in a middle- to upper-class community with low crime rates. You have just learned that your state is interested in opening several halfway houses in your community for the special population you selected.
- Provide an argument for or against the inclusion of halfway houses in your community. Explain your reasoning.
