Fundamentally, the patient’s pain stems from past childhood experiences, witnessing her grandmother dealing with immense pain associated with diabetes. The family had no money for medicine or hospital, and at some point, the grandmother had to chop her toe. Moreover, the patient suffered under the custody of her father and only found relief when he was sentenced to prison. Currently, the patient’s memories are causing her significant pain as she thinks about her mother and grandparents. Indeed, the ACEs make the patient’s condition worse, linking her status to her experience with her grandmother. She cannot manage her diabetes properly, being stuck in past painful memories of abuse and chronic pain in her diabetic grandmother.
